Girls Fitness United

My name is Mary Marie Carmel. I was born in Houston, Texas. Ever since I was 5, I have loved playing sports. The thought of playing spring tee ball and fall soccer made me happy. Over the years, I liked making friends with a common interest in sports. By the time I was 14, I aged out of community sports. My attempt at club sports was short-lived. Sports, at this point, were very disciplined and competitive rather than fun and exciting. I wanted something that I could enjoy again so I could remain physically fit. High school also missed the boat in this respect with only being one year of required gym class. I still wanted to stay in shape, so, I joined a Zumba class at the Fairfield Athletic Center. I have been participating in Zumba for almost 2 years. The disappointing thing is that I never saw girls my age in class. There is a real need for other girls my age, 14-17, in my situation who want to remain physically active and in a good sportsmanship-like environment. This is the basis for my Girl Scouts Gold award project.
